Businesses for sale in Alicante: Opportunities by sector and area

Jose Almonacid·Co-founder & M&A Advisor, Alcara Partners··11 min read

The province of Alicante has an active market for business sales and acquisitions. With a business community of more than 145,000 active companies — with a strong weight of tourism, hospitality, services and construction — and demand from Spanish and international buyers, the opportunities to acquire a going concern are plentiful and varied.

In this guide we review the sectors with the most activity, the key districts (comarcas) and what you need to know before buying a business in Alicante.

What makes Alicante an attractive market for buying a business?

Alicante combines three factors that make it a particularly interesting market for business sales: a diversified economy with a strong tourism component, a population of business owners at retirement age and a constant flow of international buyers.

The province has more than 2 million inhabitants and received 15.7 million tourists in 2024. This creates sustained demand in sectors such as hospitality, services, property maintenance and retail. Unlike other areas of the Valencian Community (Comunidad Valenciana), Alicante has a markedly international profile: the Costa Blanca attracts European buyers — British, German, Scandinavian, Belgian — who look for businesses for sale in Alicante as a way of settling in Spain.

In addition, business demographics work in the buyer's favour. A significant share of the owners of Alicante SMEs belong to the baby boom generation and are approaching retirement age with no family successor. This creates a natural flow of traspasos (transfers of a business lease and its assets) and sales that will intensify in the coming years.

Which sectors offer the most opportunities in Alicante?

Hospitality and tourism, technical services, construction and installations, and retail are the sectors where most buying opportunities are found in Alicante.

Hospitality and tourism

This is the dominant sector. Restaurants, bars, boutique hotels, holiday apartments, leisure activity companies and inbound travel agencies make up a broad market. In districts such as the Marina Alta (Dénia, Jávea) and the Marina Baixa (Benidorm, Altea, Villajoyosa), hospitality drives most of the local economy.

Opportunities range from traspasos of premises to acquisitions of larger hospitality groups. If you are interested in this sector, you can explore specific opportunities in hospitality in Alicante.

A key point: many hospitality businesses on the coast are strongly seasonal. A restaurant in Calpe may earn a large share of its revenue in the summer months. This is not necessarily bad — but you need to understand it and value the business accordingly.

Technical services and installations

Air-conditioning, plumbing, electrical, pool maintenance, home automation and solar energy companies. The combination of an extreme summer climate and an enormous housing stock (many second homes owned by foreign owners) creates constant demand.

Many of these companies were founded by a technician who is now approaching retirement age, with a small but loyal team and a portfolio of repeat customers. They are businesses with healthy margins and relatively easy to transfer if their processes are at least minimally documented. You can see opportunities in air conditioning in Alicante.

Construction and refurbishment

Construction activity on the Alicante coast has not stopped. Home refurbishment, medium-sized new-build developments and building materials companies offer opportunities for buyers with experience in the sector.

Retail and distribution

From food distributors serving the coast to specialist shops in tourist areas, the retail sector offers a variety of options. Distributors with established routes and contracts with hotel chains are especially attractive.

Which are the key districts (comarcas) for buying a business in Alicante?

Five key districts for buying a business are L'Alacantí, Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, Vega Baja and the Vinalopó, each with a different economic profile.

L'Alacantí (Alicante city, San Vicente, Campello, Mutxamel)

The urban core of the province. This is where professional services, technology, logistics and urban retail companies are concentrated. Businesses for sale here tend to have a more diversified profile that is less dependent on seasonal tourism.

Marina Alta (Dénia, Jávea, Calpe, Teulada-Moraira)

A premium area with a strong presence of European residents. Businesses tend to have higher average spend per customer and a clientele with greater purchasing power. It attracts many international buyers.

Marina Baixa (Benidorm, Altea, Villajoyosa, La Nucia)

Benidorm is an ecosystem in itself. High-volume hospitality, entertainment, tourist services and a very active traspaso market. Outside Benidorm, Altea and La Nucia offer a more residential, family-oriented profile.

Vega Baja (Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada)

A high concentration of British and Irish residents. The businesses for sale reflect this reality: bars and restaurants aimed at the expat community, estate agencies, home maintenance services and dental clinics with an international clientele.

Vinalopó (Elche, Elda, Petrer, Villena)

A more industrial profile. Elche has a strong base of footwear, manufacturing and logistics. Elda-Petrer shares the footwear heritage with a shift towards services. Here the opportunities tend to be companies with higher turnover and tangible assets.

How does the international profile of buyers make a difference?

In Alicante, foreign buyers have a notable presence in sales and acquisitions of small businesses, thanks to the large community of European residents settled on the coast.

For a Spanish buyer, this has a practical implication: you will compete with international buyers who are looking for a business as a way of settling in Spain.

For a foreign buyer, the challenge is navigating Spanish bureaucracy, understanding the tax particularities and making sure that the due diligence is thorough. A local adviser with experience in cross-border transactions is essential. Before moving forward with any transaction: read our guide to due diligence in business sales and acquisitions.

How much does it cost to buy a business in Alicante?

The range is extremely wide, from traspasos of small premises to acquisitions of much larger service or manufacturing companies. As a general reference, this is what weighs most in the price of each type of business:

  • Hospitality traspasos: location, turnover and assets included
  • Technical services companies: profit (EBITDA or SDE) and how recurring the contracts are
  • Construction/refurbishment companies: the order book and the stability of revenue
  • Distributors: established routes and contracts with customers
  • Industrial companies (Elche, Vinalopó): profit and the value of tangible assets

These are indicative references. Every business has unique circumstances that affect its valuation. If you are assessing a specific opportunity, you can use our free valuation tool to get an initial reference.

What should I bear in mind before buying?

Before signing any agreement, make sure you cover these critical points:

  1. Check the seasonality: If the business is on the coast, analyse its turnover month by month for at least two full years.
  2. Review the licences and permits: In hospitality and tourism, municipal licences are key. A change of holder may require procedures that take months.
  3. Assess dependence on the owner: Will the business work without its current owner? It is one of the factors that carry the most weight in the valuation. To see how this affects value: read our article on how to stop being indispensable in your business.
  4. Understand the clientele: Is it local, tourist, expat? Is it recurring, or does it depend on constantly winning new customers?
  5. Analyse the competition: Especially in coastal hospitality, saturation can be a real problem.

Frequently asked questions about businesses for sale in Alicante

Is 2026 a good time to buy a business in Alicante?

It can be. The retirement of baby boomer owners without a family successor is increasing the supply of businesses for sale, which widens buyers' options in many sectors.

Can I buy a business in Alicante as a foreigner?

Yes. Every foreigner, including EU citizens, needs an NIE (foreigner identification number) to buy a company or a business in Spain. Non-EU citizens, depending on their situation, may also need a visa or residence authorisation. Residence by investment (the "golden visa") was abolished in April 2025 (Ley Orgánica 1/2025, a Spanish organic law); the entrepreneur route under Ley 14/2013 (Spanish Entrepreneurs Act) remains available. The sale and purchase itself has no restrictions based on nationality.

Which sectors carry less risk for a first-time buyer?

Technical services with recurring contracts (maintenance, air conditioning, cleaning) tend to carry less risk than hospitality, because they do not depend on seasonality or on the location of the premises.

How long does the process of buying a business in Alicante take?

It depends on how well prepared the parties are and on the complexity of the transaction; several months usually pass from first contact to completion. Transactions with international buyers can take longer because of the procedures for the NIE, opening bank accounts and obtaining financing.

Do I need bank financing to buy a business?

Not necessarily, but it is the most common option. Many transactions combine the buyer's own funds with bank financing or vendor finance (the seller finances part of the price through deferred payments).

How do I find businesses for sale that are not advertised on online portals?

Through a professional intermediary. Alcara Partners is a private marketplace for buying and selling businesses in the Valencian Community, not a listings portal: each opportunity is presented anonymously, and the full details are only shared with interested buyers once we know their profile and they have signed a confidentiality agreement. Register as a buyer and we will let you know about the opportunities that match your profile.

What taxes do I pay when buying a business in Alicante?

It depends on the structure of the transaction (purchase of shares — participaciones — vs. purchase of assets). In a purchase of shares (participaciones or acciones), the transaction is, as a general rule, exempt from ITP (transfer tax, Impuesto sobre Transmisiones Patrimoniales) and VAT (IVA) (art. 338 of Ley 6/2023 de los Mercados de Valores, the Securities Markets Act). The exception: if the company's assets consist mainly of real estate located in Spain and control of the company is acquired, it may be taxed under ITP as a purchase of real estate. In an asset purchase, if the whole business is transferred as an autonomous economic unit, the transaction is not subject to VAT (art. 7.1 of the Ley del IVA, the VAT Act) and, if the seller is a business or a professional, nor to ITP, except for any real estate included, which is subject to ITP (art. 7.5 of the Texto Refundido de la Ley del ITPAJD, the consolidated Transfer Tax and Stamp Duty Act). If individual assets are bought, VAT applies (21% as a general rule), which the buyer can deduct if they are a business or a professional. It is advisable to confirm this with a tax adviser.

Is it advisable to hire an adviser for the purchase?

Absolutely. An adviser specialising in M&A not only helps you find opportunities, but also protects you during the negotiation, the due diligence and completion. Having advice reduces the risk of buying a business with hidden problems.
