The first step is to be clear about what the business is. A self-consumption installer for homes and businesses lives from winning new projects and carrying them out well; a company that owns operating plants lives from the energy it sells over many years. The buyers, the information they ask for and the way of valuing differ, so it is worth presenting them separately if the company does both.

In an installation company, the buyer will look at the portfolio of signed and pending projects, how customers are won and what each one costs, the proportion of private customers versus businesses, margins per installation and whether there are maintenance contracts providing recurring income. Turnover that depends on one-off campaigns or temporary subsidies is valued more cautiously than stable turnover.

Warranties are also reviewed: who is responsible for the panels, inverters and batteries already installed, what the manufacturers cover and what the company takes on. Staff qualifications, agreements with equipment distributors and a technical team that does not depend on the founder complete the analysis.

For operating plants, what matters is actual output compared with estimated output, the energy sales contracts, the permits and grid connection, the condition of the equipment and the rights over the land. It is a detailed technical and legal analysis; the buyer usually orders an independent review before completion.
