Business sales and acquisitions in Alicante

The province of Alicante (Costa Blanca) is home to 2,030,037 inhabitants according to the 2025 municipal register, and to a fabric of SMEs spread across municipalities of very different sizes. For anyone thinking of selling, this means there is almost never a single buyer profile: depending on the activity, the interested party may be a competitor from the same district (comarca), a group from another province that wants to enter the market, or a manager who wants to stop being an employee.

On this page you will find the official figures that describe Alicante's economy, linked to their source, and the sector pages covering what weighs most in the valuation of each type of business. If you are on the other side and looking for a business to buy in the province, they help you size up the sector before talking to a seller.

A well-prepared sale starts long before looking for a buyer: tidy accounts for several financial years, written contracts, a team that works without depending on the owner and a realistic idea of what the business is worth. All of this can be worked on in advance, and it is what most distinguishes a completed transaction from one that stalls halfway.

Economic activity

According to the central business directory (DIRCE) of the INE (Spanish National Statistics Institute), at the start of 2025 the province had 145,106 active companies, operating from 170,496 premises or establishments. The difference between the two figures arises because one company can have several premises. Across the Valencian Community (Comunidad Valenciana) as a whole, the same directory counted 372,121 active companies.

By broad sector, the statistics of the Generalitat (the Valencian regional government) based on the DIRCE break those companies down as follows: 8,684 in industry, 18,893 in construction and 117,529 in services. Within services, the block of retail and wholesale trade, transport and hospitality accounts for 48,367 companies, professional and technical activities 25,563, other personal services 14,672, real estate activities 11,872, education, health and social services 10,928, financial and insurance activities 3,112 and information and communications 3,015.

Hotel accommodation gives a measure of tourism activity, albeit a partial one: in 2025 the province's hotel establishments recorded 5,067,006 travellers and 18,840,185 overnight stays, according to the INE's Hotel Occupancy Survey (sum of the twelve months). These figures cover hotels only; they do not include tourist apartments, campsites, rural tourism or private rentals.

In logistics, the Port Authority of Alicante handled total port traffic of 2,906,944 tonnes and 193,416 TEU in containers in 2025, according to the summary by Puertos del Estado (the Spanish state ports agency) with provisional year-end data. In industry, the leather and footwear division contributes the most establishments to Alicante's manufacturing total, with 1,648 premises, followed by metal products (1,267) and food (959).

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the sector and the size. For small businesses the buyer is usually a professional in the same trade or a manager who wants to become an entrepreneur by buying something that already works. For companies with more structure, competitors looking to grow, groups from outside the province and, sometimes, financial investors appear. It is worth preparing the information with the most likely type of buyer for your business in mind.

There is no fixed timeframe. The factors include how well the documentation is prepared, the number of buyers with genuine interest, the financing the buyer needs and how long the review of accounts, contracts and legal matters takes. A company with its information in order from the start usually moves faster than one where every question from the buyer means searching for paperwork.

Both, and each case is indicated. The total number of active companies and its breakdown by broad sector count companies. The figures for specific activities that you will see on the sector pages count premises or establishments, because the INE does not publish companies by province and detailed activity. A company with three premises appears once as a company and three times as an establishment.

Yes, confidentiality is a normal part of the process. The business is first presented anonymously, without its name or any details that identify it, and detailed information is only shared with buyers who have signed a confidentiality agreement. When and how to inform the team is decided calmly, normally once the transaction is well advanced; if the business is sold as a going concern (unidad productiva), Article 44 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores (Spanish Workers' Statute) requires information to be given before the transfer, so it is worth confirming this with an employment adviser.

As a basis, the annual accounts and tax returns for the last financial years, a breakdown of sales by customer and by business line, the contracts with customers, suppliers and the landlord of the premises, the workforce and their terms, the licences and permits for the activity and an inventory of the assets. Having all this before you start avoids delays and gives the buyer confidence.
