Business sales and acquisitions in La Ribera Alta (Valencia)

Unlike other districts (comarcas) that depend on a single city, La Ribera Alta spreads its population across several medium-sized towns. Alzira is the largest, but Algemesí, Carcaixent, Carlet, Alginet, L'Alcúdia, Benifaió and Alberic also carry weight of their own. For anyone selling or buying a business, this means several neighbouring local markets, each with its own customers and competitors.

That dispersion has advantages: a company that is well established in its municipality can be hard to displace, and a buyer from a neighbouring town may see it as a way to extend their area of operation. It also means you have to explain clearly where customers come from, because depending on a single town is not the same as serving the whole comarca.

Below you will find the official population and company figures for La Ribera Alta, the sectors that carry most weight according to that data, and the practical questions that tend to arise when preparing a transaction here.

Economic activity

According to the 2025 municipal register (padrón), 237,026 people live in the comarca, in the municipalities that the Portal Estadístic de la Generalitat Valenciana includes in it. Among the most populous, after Alzira and Algemesí, come Carcaixent and Carlet, and the full list of towns appears on this page.

The central business register (directorio central de empresas) counts 13,226 active companies in La Ribera Alta at the start of 2025. Of these, 1,001 are industrial and 1,822 are in construction. Within services, which total 10,174, the largest groups are retail, transport and hospitality, with 4,561, professional and technical activities, with 1,635, and other personal services, with 1,337.

Industry is what most sets it apart from its neighbour La Safor: with a larger population, La Ribera Alta has almost twice as many industrial companies (1,001 compared with 512). The comarca figures do not say what each one does, so to find out which type of manufacturing predominates you have to look at each company individually.

We highlight manufacturing, because of that industrial group; distribution and retail, because the retail and transport block is the largest in the comarca; and construction and plumbing, because installation companies are classified within construction, with 1,822 companies.

Frequently asked questions

The accounts for the last few financial years, the activity licences and any environmental permits that apply, a list of machinery and its condition, the contracts with the main customers and suppliers, and information on the workforce. If you own the industrial unit, decide whether it is included in the sale or leased to the buyer, because that changes the transaction considerably.

Both options are common. Selling everything together is simpler, but requires a buyer with greater financial capacity. Keeping the property and leasing it to the buyer lowers the price of the company and leaves you with rental income. Each option has different tax consequences, which you should confirm with a tax adviser.

Yes. With several towns of similar size, a company in the same sector in a nearby town may want to gain customers, staff or a presence in your town without starting from scratch. It is a buyer who understands the business, although you should protect your information with a confidentiality agreement before sharing data.

If the buyer acquires the company as a legal entity, the employment contracts continue as they were. If they buy the business as a going concern (unidad productiva), the law provides that the buyer takes over the employment relationships, under Article 44 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores (Spanish Workers' Statute) on transfer of undertakings (sucesión de empresa). It is advisable to confirm this with an employment adviser for your specific case.

A great deal. If a large part of turnover comes from one or two customers, the buyer will see a risk of losing them after the sale. Having written contracts, diversifying the customer base and showing that the relationship does not depend only on you all help that risk weigh less in the negotiation.
