Business sales and acquisitions in Valencia

Selling a business in the province of Valencia is rarely like selling a house. What changes hands is a going concern: its customers, its team, its contracts and the way it generates profit every month. That is why the final price depends less on a list price and more on how well the seller can explain and document that business to someone looking at it for the first time. Here, Valencia means the province of Valencia, not only the city.

On this page you will find a snapshot of the Valencian business landscape built solely from official statistics, links to each sector with its own guide, and answers to the questions that usually come up when considering a sale or acquisition. If you are a buyer, it helps you focus your search; if you are an owner, it helps you understand the ground your company will compete on when it goes to market.

Valencia in figures

Population

2,758,633

Active companies

186,970

Economic activity

The province had 2,758,633 inhabitants according to the official population figures of the INE (Spanish National Statistics Institute) as of 2025. The Central Business Directory (Directorio Central de Empresas, DIRCE) for the same year listed 186,970 active companies, out of a total of 372,121 across the Valencian Community (Comunidad Valenciana) as a whole. That count does not include agriculture, fishing or public administration, which the directory leaves out.

If you count establishments instead of companies, the figure rises to 216,608 active premises, because a single company can operate several shops, offices or industrial units. This difference matters when reading the sector pages: there, the provincial figures are for establishments, since the INE does not publish companies by province and activity.

By broad sector, services account for 156,606 companies, construction 20,057 and industry 10,307. Within services, the trade, transport and hospitality group totals 60,854 companies and professional and technical activities 35,732; education, health and social services together account for 16,960, and information and communications 5,428.

Two indicators help to gauge tourism and logistics activity. Hotel establishments in the province recorded 3,688,011 travellers and 8,744,136 overnight stays in 2025, according to the Hotel Occupancy Survey (Encuesta de Ocupación Hotelera; hotels only, excluding apartments and holiday lets). At the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia, managed by the Port Authority of Valencia (Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia), Puertos del Estado (the Spanish state ports agency) recorded total port traffic of 80,672,362 tonnes and 5,662,661 TEU of containers in 2025, based on provisional year-end data.

Frequently asked questions

There is no fixed timeframe. It depends on how well prepared the documentation is, the size of the company, how many buyers are a good fit for it and how the financing is negotiated. What does shorten the process is going to market with clear accounts, well-organised contracts and an honest explanation of the weak points before the buyer discovers them on their own.

The profile varies by sector: competitors who want to grow or enter another area, managers looking to stop being employees, private investors, family groups and, in companies of a certain size, funds or family offices. Each of them values different things, so it is worth thinking from the start about which type of buyer your business suits best.

They are two different transactions. In a sale of shares (participaciones, the shares of an SL — a Spanish limited company), the buyer acquires the whole company, with its history; in an asset sale, they take only what is agreed, such as customers, machinery or brand. The tax and liability consequences differ greatly from one approach to the other, so it is worth confirming this with a tax and legal adviser before deciding.

The usual approach is to first present an anonymous profile of the company and ask for a confidentiality agreement before revealing the name or sensitive data. Information is provided in stages, from the general to the detailed, as the interested party shows they are serious. Employees and customers usually find out when the transaction is well advanced. If the business is sold as a going concern (unidad productiva), Article 44 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores (Spanish Workers' Statute) requires the workers' representatives or, if there are none, the workforce to be informed in advance; it is worth confirming this with an employment adviser.

None on its own. The official figures describe the environment: how many companies and establishments there are and in which activities. The value of your company comes from its own numbers, above all its normalised profit, and from factors such as dependence on the owner, customer concentration or the condition of equipment, which are explained on each sector page.
