Business sales and acquisitions in Marina Alta (Alicante)

The Marina Alta combines a few large municipalities with many very small ones. Dénia, Xàbia/Jávea and Calp are home to a large share of the inhabitants, followed by Teulada, Benissa and Pego, while towns such as La Vall d'Ebo, La Vall d'Alcalà or Tormos have only a few hundred residents. That contrast carries over to businesses: a company with customers in Dénia is not the same as one that depends on a village of a few hundred inhabitants.

What most distinguishes the district (comarca) in the statistics is the weight of construction. For anyone selling a construction company, a refurbishment business or an installation firm, this means there are competitors and potential buyers in the same trade nearby; for buyers, it means there is choice, but also that it pays to compare carefully before deciding.

This page brings together the official population and company data for the Marina Alta, explains why we highlight certain sectors and answers common questions about selling or buying here.

Economic activity

According to the 2025 municipal register (padrón), the Marina Alta has 198,258 inhabitants in the municipalities that the Portal Estadístic de la Generalitat Valenciana assigns to it; you will find them all in the list on this page. Dénia is the most populous, ahead of Xàbia/Jávea and Calp.

At the start of 2025 there were 18,900 active companies. Construction accounted for 3,364, a figure far higher than in the Marina Baixa (2,051), although the two comarcas have populations of a similar size. Industry, on the other hand, comes to only 637 companies.

Among services, which group together 14,271 companies, the retail, transport and hospitality block is the largest, with 5,097. Professional and technical activities reach 3,437 and real estate activities 1,666. These are figures from the central business register (directorio central de empresas), released by municipality and comarca.

We highlight construction and, within it, HVAC and electrical installation, because installation companies are classified in that same group, the group that carries more weight here than in the neighbouring comarca. We add professional services because of their 3,437 companies and hospitality because of the retail, transport and hospitality block.

The order book of contracted work and its margin, relationships with repeat customers, the quality and stability of the teams, and that there are no outstanding claims or warranty liabilities. They will also review the machinery and vehicles and whether subcontracting is in order, because any contingency is deducted from the price.

By separating in the accounts what is new-build work from what is maintenance and recurring services. Signed maintenance contracts, with their duration and renewals, are what reassures a buyer most, because they secure work even if new-build work falls.

There are fewer local buyers, but a business that serves a whole area or has no competition nearby can be attractive to someone from outside. What matters is that its activity does not depend only on your presence and that the buyer can keep the customers.

The law does not require an audit in order to sell. As a general rule, a company must have its accounts audited unless it meets the exemption conditions in Article 263 of the Ley de Sociedades de Capital (Spanish Companies Act), and even when it is not obliged to, minority shareholders can request an audit in the cases set out in Article 265.2; it is advisable to confirm this with an adviser. Even so, the accounts must be reliable and match the tax returns filed. If business income or expenses are mixed with personal ones, it is better to sort them out first, because the buyer will only pay for what they can verify.

If the shares (participaciones) are sold, the liabilities remain with the company, which is why the buyer will ask to know about them and to limit them in the contract. If only the business is sold, the parties need to agree who is responsible for previous work. It is advisable to confirm this with a legal adviser.
